Straight answers on accident recovery

What should I do right after a crash?

Get everyone to safety, call 911 if anyone is hurt, and turn on hazards. Take photos before the cars are moved. Leave a lane clear if you can, and only call a tow once the scene is safe and police have said it is fine.

Who chooses the tow company after an accident?

If police order the tow, the officer decides, and inside the city that means the contract wrecker assigned to the police zone. If you are free to choose, you pick, and the destination is your call, including a body shop or your home.

Will the car be released from a storage yard right away?

Not always. Yards release on their own paperwork, and county lots have set hours. Fulton County releases impounds through the Marshal admin office at 185 Central Ave SW, 9th floor, Mon to Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call ahead and ask what ID and papers you need.

Does insurance pay for the tow?

Often a collision claim or roadside add-on covers some or all of it, but terms differ. Ask your insurer before you pay, and keep the invoice either way.
